Indiana State Police arrest Chicago woman who bit trooper during traffic stop

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police have arrested a Chicago woman who bit a state trooper during a traffic stop on Saturday.

According to a press release, a trooper was patrolling around 6:40 p.m. when he observed a silver Hyundai with Illinois registration driving on Interstate 94 at a high rate of speed. The trooper subsequently began to try to catch up to the vehicle.

By the time the trooper got in position to make a traffic stop, he paced the vehicle at 105 mph. I-94’s speed limit in that area is 70 mph.

The trooper also noticed the vehicle was changing lanes without signaling and passing other cars from the right lane.

ISP indicated that the trooper ultimately conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle, though it’s driver did not pull over right when the trooper turned his lights on. Eventually, the car came to a stop.

ISP reported that its trooper noticed the driver displaying signs of impairment during the traffic stop. As the stop began to unfold, the driver, who was later identified as 22-year-old Shelby E. Foster of Chicago, became verbally aggressive with the trooper.

ISP’s release indicates the woman claimed she was the relative of a police officer from Chicago. She also demanded the trooper call the relative immediately.

As the stop continued, the trooper located two fake Illinois IDs in the woman’s pursre.

ISP detained the woman after the stop, but while they were transporting her to the Porter County Jail, she shook free from the handcuffs police had put on her. Once she freed a hand from the cuffs, the trooper pulled onto the shoulder of the highway.

Per ISP, the trooper then tried to get the handcuff back on Foster so he could continue transporting her to jail. As he was trying to adjust the cuffs, Foster bit him in the right arm.

The trooper managed to get the handcuffs back on Foster and resume transporting her to jail. During their drive to the jail, however, Foster threated the trooper and his family. She also continued to claim she was related to several police officers from Chicago.

Foster refused to take a certified chemical test for intoxication at the Porter County Jail, according to ISP. Police claim she also spit on a jail officer during the booking process.

Foster now faces the following preliminary charges:

• Battery by bodily waste fluid (two counts) — Level 6 Felony
• Intimidation — Level 6 Felony
• Battery against a public safety official engaged in official duty — Level 6 Felony
• Resisting law enforcement — Class A Misdemeanor
• Reckless driving — Class A Misdemeanor
• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated and endangering a person — Class A misdemeanor
• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated — Class C misdemeanor
• Possession of false identification — Class C misdemeanor
