Bernstein & Holmes: 'The Cubs are always seemingly prospect humping'

(670 The Score) In recent years, the Cubs have been reticent in to trade promising talent in their farm system for more established MLB players.

In many ways, that was logical, given that the Cubs were amid a rebuilding phase in their 74-win season in 2022 and didn’t have all that high of expectations ahead of their 83-win 2023 campaign. But as the Cubs sit at a disappointing 39-46 entering play Tuesday as they’re looking to ascend to a higher level of contention, they could perhaps use a reminder to not overvalue their own players, notably their prospects, Score midday host Laurence Holmes said.

In Holmes’ mind, the Cubs should be more open to making changes this coming offseason, even if that means giving up a promising prospect for an established player. At the least, they shouldn't count on their prospects so much for productivity. They'd perhaps be wiser to view ascending young talent as more of a luxury than a necessity.

“The Cubs are always seemingly prospect humping – ‘when guys get here,’” Holmes said on his show Tuesday. “Think about the people that you've been told about just over the last like four years — 'When Brennen Davis gets here, when Miguel Amaya gets here, when Matt Mervis gets here, when Pete Crow-Armstrong gets here.’ There’s a lot of questions about guys coming up and being able to help the Cubs in the now, which is why I don’t like the idea, when I talk to Cubs fans about the Cubs making change or making trades, people always want to hang on to, ‘Well, their minor league system is stacked.’ Yeah, and then what happens when they get to the major leagues? You end up in the same place looking for the same stuff.”
