CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two people were killed and another person was wounded early Wednesday morning in separate shootings that took place on two Chicago-area expressways, according to Illinois State Police (ISP).

The first shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. on a ramp that gets northbound Interstate 55 travelers onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 94. Officials said they found a shooting victim dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash.

All lanes of the ramp and northbound I-55 were closed for several hours following the crash. ISP reopened the lanes at about 9 a.m.

The second shooting took place on the ramp from Stony Island Avenue to northbound I-94 at about 2:20 a.m. Officials said deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash and found two shooting victims on the ramp.

Before authorities arrived, though, a tow truck driver stopped to help the drivers involved in the crash. ISP said the tow truck driver’s arrival was followed by a fight that escalated into a shooting.

It was unclear what prompted the violence, but ISP said one shooting victim was declared dead at the scene. The other was taken to a local hospital.

All lanes on the ramp were closed while deputies investigated the scene.
