On Tuesday, the Chicago Cubs begin a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles. With a tough task ahead, one of the team's most important bullpen arms is returning from the injured list. According to the team, RHP Mark Leiter Jr. has returned from the 15-day IL. In order to make room for him on the roster, RHP Ethan Roberts was optioned back to Triple-A Iowa.

Prior to hitting the IL, Leiter Jr. was one of the most trusted arms in the Cubs' bullpen. Although Leiter Jr.'s 5.34 ERA entering play Tuesday is less than impressive, he's been used 32 times this season and pitched to a 0.87 ERA through 14 appearances in March and April. The injury could've been linked to rougher performances in May and June.

As for Roberts, the youngster has made his way back to the majors after undergoing Tommy John. In three appearances, Roberts pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball. That said, Roberts walked two and allowed five hits while only fanning three. His return was successful and he could be back at some point barring any injuries.

    Pitching Injury Updates

In addition to Leiter Jr.'s return, there were some new updates on a number of injured pitchers. According to Marquee Sports Network's Taylor McGregor, Caleb Kilian and Julian Merryweather are making rehab appearances on Tuesday, and Javier Assad threw a bullpen on Tuesday. Kilian will throw in South Bend and Merryweather will throw in Iowa.

Kilian was lost to a Teres Major strain in his back during Spring Training. Kilian was said to be back closer to All-Star break. After hitting 100 mph in his first rehab appearance, it appears Kilian will be ready to make an impact following the break. His addition to the bullpen could be a huge piece down the stretch.

As for Merryweather, he was lost early in April with a shoulder issue . Arguably the Cubs' best reliever a year ago, Merryweather has been sorely missed. His return will also be impactful for a struggling bullpen.

Assad is reportedly expected back when he is eligible to come off the injured list. He will likely start one of the four games this coming weekend against the St. Louis Cardinals.
