Though it’s attached to Khmai Cambodian , this more casual sister spot has a less formal space with TVs and a menu that focuses on street food and smaller bites. But it’s clear this restaurant family in Rogers Park has strong genes—Kaun Khmai’s dishes are equally delicious. Servers in colorful Khmer outfits slice into banana leaf bundles like magicians sawing boxes in half, revealing savory Cambodian sausage fried rice. Tables full of local residents and Loyola students give the room a welcoming buzz, while people at the bar snack on tangy tamarind wings and crispy catfish with chili sauce. Walking into Kaun Khmai is a great alternative if its reservation-only neighbor is booked, but it’s also an excellent first choice for a casual date or catch-up.
