Many fans call Cody Johnson “the quintessential country singer.” The “Dirt Cheap” artist has snagged three CMT Music Awards and two CMA trophies. Beyond his music, however, “CoJo” has cultivated a dedicated following based on his adherence to the “cowboy code.” “Your moral code is a standard that doesn’t waver,” Johnson told Hits Daily Double in March. “It’s always there—right is right, wrong is wrong.” Recently, the “Human” singer called for unity in the wake of Saturday’s (July 13) incident at a Donald Trump rally.

“I’m So Sick and Tired of the Division”

Cody Johnson headlined the Windy City Smokeout festival Saturday (July 13) at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. About 30 minutes before the native Texan took the stage, the well-documented incident at Donald Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania occurred.

Johnson didn’t hold back as he addressed the crowd during his set. “The fact that any American citizen would think what they did today would solve a problem in this country is absolutely disgusting,” the “‘Til You Can’t” singer said to much applause from the audience.

He continued, “You wanna solve a problem on Election Day? Go in there and vote for who you want. You know why? Because before most of you were born, an American soldier died for you to have the right to disagree with somebody else in this country.”

Johnson’s voice rose above the crowd’s applause as he went on to call for unity. “I’m tired of the hatred. I’m tired of the division,” the country star said. Next, he reminded his audience that everyone there had a “God-given American right” to support any political candidate they wanted.

“That right was fought with sacrifice,” Johnson said. “Sacrifice from a dead police officer. Sacrifice from a dead firefighter. A dead soldier that went over and said, ‘You know what? I’m going to fight for something bigger.’ So, I don’t give a damn who you vote for, and I don’t give a damn what’s on the news. There are only three things I give a damn about tonight, you listening to me. They are red, white, and blue.”
