The Chicago Cubs keep their draft trend going in the fourth round of the 2024 MLB Draft. After selecting three infielders in the first three rounds, the Cubs add a fourth infielder with the 120th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. In the fourth round, the Cubs selected SS Ty Southisene out of Basic High School in Nevada.

Southisene came into the draft as the 111th overall prospect per MLB Pipeline. Already 19 years old, Southisene is committed to play his collegiate ball at Tennessee next season. He is the second high school shortstop selected by the Cubs after the team took SS Ronny Cruz in the third round .

The high schooler has a solid hit tool, with exceptional run tool. He is small, but don't get down on the 5-foot-9, 170-pound shortstop. He has all the tools, IQ, and technique to remain at shortstop in the future. Although not a thumper per se just yet, Southisene should be able to be a really good all-around hitter with proper development.

As the number one player in the state of Nevada, Southisene spent three seasons on the varsity team in high school. He owns a career .412 average and .498 on-base percentage over 68 career games. In his senior season, Southisene batted .495 with 44 runs scored, 47 hits, 24 RBIs, 11 doubles, three triples, and one home run in just 28 games. The hit tool with plus speed is very much present. In addition, Southisene had a 1.265 OPS as a senior.

Speaking of his 55-grade speed, Southisene stole 20 bases as a senior as well.

Signing Southisene will surely be a priority for the Cubs. Even if he does not stick at shortstop, his athleticism, hit tool, and speed will make him an asset anywhere on the field. Although small, Southisene is true player and asset to develop moving forward.
