    Cubs select 6 position players, 2 pitchers on 2nd day of MLB Draft

    (670 The Score) The Cubs selected six position players and two pitchers on the second day of the MLB Draft on Monday.

    The organization got its day going by selecting a pair of prep players. In the third round, Chicago drafted 17-year-old shortstop Ronny Cruz out of Miami Christian School in Miami, Fla. Cruz hit .397 with a 1.050 OPS in 75 plate appearances in his 2024 season in high school. He has committed to the University of Miami.

    In the fourth round, the Cubs selected 19-year-old shortstop Ty Southisene out of Basic High School in Henderson, Nev. He slashed .495/.560/.705 in 116 plate appearances as a senior in high school. He has committed to the University of Tennessee.

    In the fifth round, the Cubs took 21-year-old University of San Diego catcher Ariel Armas, who was recognized as the nation’s top defensive catcher in 2024, when he also earned first-team all-WCC honors. Armas hit .298 with six homers, 29 RBIs and an .828 OPS in 55 games last season.

    In the sixth round, Chicago added 21-year-old UC Santa Barbara right-hander Ryan Gallagher, who had a 2.22 ERA in 89 innings this past season. Gallagher missed the 2023 season with Tommy John surgery.

    In the seventh round, the Cubs drafted 21-year-old UC Santa Barbara outfielder Ivan Brethowr, who earned first-team all-Big West honors in 2024. He hit 15 homers this past season

    In the eighth round, the Cubs added Nicholls State first baseman Edgar Alvarez, who hit .405 with 13 homers, 67 RBIs and a 1.192 OPS in 58 games this past season. Alvarez is a lefty bat.

    The Cubs closed their day by selecting Lamar University right-hander Brooks Caple in the ninth round and UC San Diego third baseman Matt Halbach in the 10th round.

    The MLB Draft will conclude Tuesday with rounds 11-20.
