Bears veteran called possible cut candidate with tough decisions coming

The summer is one of the most exciting times in the National Football League calendar.

A new season is on the horizon and teams have the chance to load up in free agency, the trade market, and the NFL Draft in order to help fill roster holes from the previous campaign. With a new season coming, that also means that each team still has hope that they could be the next team to snag the Lombardi Trophy and win the Super Bowl.

There is a lot of excitement, but there also are some tough decisions that need to be made and the Chicago Bears will be no different. The new upcoming season is exciting to think about, but franchises also need to trim down rosters and cut players.

One player who was called a possible cut candidate for the Bears is veteran receiver Dante Pettis by Bleacher Report's Joe Tansey.

"Dante Pettis falls into the exact same category as (Velus Jones)," Tansey said. "There is not much of a path for Pettis to earn first-team snaps because of how top-heavy the wide receiver room is. The No. 4 wide receiver on the Bears roster will likely only pop up in certain situations if the top players remain healthy.

"Pettis either has to prove his worth on special teams, where he'll be in direct competition with Jones, or beat out (Tyler Scott) for the No. 4 role. Scott is younger and should be kept around after he displayed some bright spots last season, so Pettis may be auditioning for another team in preseason."

Pettis appeared in 17 games for the Bears in 2022 and had 19 receptions for 245 yards. He didn't appear in a game last year due to injuries and now seems like his time with the organization could end up coming to an end.
