Landmark status granted to Hyde Park church

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A church in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood has been named a city landmark.

Members of the City Council approved landmark status for the 118-year-old Hyde Park Union Church building at the corner of Woodlawn Avenue and 56th Street, which until 1963 was called the Hyde Park Baptist Church.

The church's education wing, which was built in 1926, was included in the landmark designation.

The church building was designed by James Gamble Rogers, who also designed the main building of the Laboratory Schools at the University of Chicago.

According to a city landmark report, Hyde Park Union Church represents the growth and development of the neighborhood.

The report goes on to say the religious and social activism of the congregation has made the church a progressive, inclusive and intellectually vibrant place of worship.
