Cubs' Futility Continues in 3-2 Loss to Brewers
By Bobby Foster,
The 2024 Chicago Cubs have disappointed on a daily basis, dragging team and fan morale down. For all the preseason hype with a new manager, things were supposed to improve drastically this season. Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers was the latest reminder of the North Siders' woes.
Now, all that remains is a wasteland of underachievers and missed opportunities. For fans, they'll have no choice but to watch along as the Cubs march toward a painful end to the 2024 season.
As the trade deadline nears, the hope is that the Cubs can strengthen their farm system with prospects who fulfill roster needs. It's shameful that the Cubs find themselves in limbo, but it's the reality of their current outlook.
Tale of the Tape
With Justin Steele on the mound, the Cubs had a fighting chance to take the series from the Brewers. Unfortunately, the lefty found himself behind early as Jackson Chourio opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning.
The Cubs counterpunched thanks to Ian Happ's RBI knock, setting the tone for a close game.
Steele pitched 5.1 serviceable innings before turning it over to the bullpen. But given the Cubs' offensive deficiencies, there wasn't good reason to believe a hit parade was on the horizon.
The Cubs achieved their only lead of the day thanks to Seiya Suzuki and his solo home run in the third inning. However, they were seemingly allergic to runs from then on. Chicago had prime opportunities to add to the lead but instead let the game and the series slip away to the Brewers.
Brice Turang's RBI single made it a new game in the sixth inning. Hector Neris entered the game looking to maintain the tie, but things never seem to work as planned for the Cubs.
William Contreras' RBI double in the ninth sealed Milwaukee's win and put yet another nail in the Cubs' coffin.
Takeaways
It's hard to find any positives on the North Side right now. The roster isn't built for success and it's time for a sell-off.
While Chicago touts decent young pitching, Jed Hoyer failed to reinforce it with quality power bats. There's a give-and-take here that the Cubs fail to understand. There needs to be an internal evaluation of how the team is run.
