Bears expected to host a workout for a former Panthers RB during day off from training camp

The Chicago Bears coaching staff are staying busy while the rest of the players are away during their scheduled day off from training camp on Sunday.

According to Aaron Wilson , the Bears are expected to host a workout for former Carolina Panthers running back Spencer Brown later today.

Sunday is the first day the team has had off of training camp since Wednesday and will return to the practice field on Monday leading up to Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Houston Texans.

If the workout goes well and Brown makes a strong impression on the coaching staff, he'll have an opportunity to join the running back room comprised of D'Andre Swift, Khalil Herbert, Roschon Johnson, Travis Homer, and UDFA Ian Wheeler.

Brown was waived by the Panthers back in May after the two sides reached an injury settlement. He has primarily been off and on the Panthers practice squad in his career since signing as an undrafted free agent 2021. He has appeared in six regular season games during his three year career. During the 2022 season in Carolina, Brown played 25 percent of the team's special teams snaps while rushing for 43 yards on 9 carries.

Brown was on the Panthers practice squad while Thomas Brown served as the team's offensive coordinator during the 2023 season. Brown is now the Bears offensive passing game coordinator, so he'll have some familiarity on the coaching staff.

The former UAB standout also worked out with the Cleveland Browns earlier in the week after the team placed running back Nick Chubb on the PUP list. Keeping tabs on some of the backs on the market is good process at this point in the year. Brown likely will just be used as fresh legs to deploy throughout the preseason, if he's able to land with the Bears. From there, it's up to him to make an impact on the field to turn heads.

The Bears are currently at the 90-man roster limit allowed for teams during training camp. Meaning, the team would have to release a player if they wish to sign Brown to the roster. However, it never hurts to have Brown on call, even if they don't sign him now, as a player they could bring in if someone were to get injured for any reason.
