Do the Bears Have a Gem of a Pass-Catcher in Collin Johnson?

The Chicago Bears already have one of the NFL's best pass-catching groups, highlighted by a wide receiver trio that features two star veterans in D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen, as well as a top-10 pick in rookie Rome Odunze.

They also have a solid pair of experienced tight ends in Cole Kmet and Gerald Everett, which should give rookie quarterback Caleb Williams plenty of weapons this season and beyond.

But despite inclement weather bringing a premature end to Thursday night's preseason opener against the Houston Texans, the Bears might have found themselves with another talented playmaker for the passing game in Collin Johnson.

With the Bears resting their starters for this game, Johnson took full advantage of his chance to shine, catching three passes for 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns:

Regardless of whether your consider him a wide receiver or a tight end, Johnson has a versatile skill set with the frame and athleticism to create mismatch problems for opposing defenses.

A fifth-round pick out of Texas in 2020, Johnson didn't make the final roster cuts for the Jacksonville Jaguars in his second season, but caught on with the New York Giants for two years before joining the Bears' practice squad halfway though the 2023 season.

Even with a deep group of teammates ahead of him on the depth chart, Johnson's unique skill set should allow him to carve out a role this season, especially if he keeps up these kinds of performances throughout the rest of the preseason.

If another team believes he's worthy of a bigger opportunity, though, don't be surprised if the Bears get some trade offers before the regular season rolls around.
