The Chicago Bears are fresh off a preseason win against the Houston Texans and are already making some changes to the roster not even 24 hours later.
The Bears have signed undrafted rookie defensive back Ro Torrence to the 90-man roster during the designated day off. The team will return to the field for practice on Saturday. To make room on the roster, the Bears waived long snapper Cameron Lyons, according to Josh Schrock .
Torrence originally signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent but was released by the team following OTAs and mandatory minicamp.
Torrence was a standout defensive back for Arizona State after transferring from Auburn in 2022. In his two years at Arizona State, the 6'3, 210 pounder recorded two interceptions, 11 pass deflections, and 73 total tackles. During the 2023 season, Torrence allowed 31 receptions on 50 targets for 366 yards and four touchdowns.
Torrence predominately played on the outside as a physical cornerback and lacked special teams value playing only 90 special teams snaps during his final season. With how loaded the Bears secondary already is with young talent, Torrence will have to make an impact there if he wants to stick around in Chicago. His speed is also a concern after running a 4.70 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.
The Bears have already found one undrafted rookie defensive back who looks to be a diamond in the rough in Reddy Steward. Earlier this week, Steward was taking first-team snaps in the nickel while starter Kyler Gordon missed time due to injury .
Steward played 10 snaps in the Bears preseason opener on Thursday before the game was stopped due to weather. Steward was targeted one time that ended up going for a loss of three yards after he made the tackle. At cornerback, the Bears also utilized Terell Smith, Jaylon Jones, Leon Jones, Josh Blackwell, and Greg Stroman.
The Bears cornerbacks played relatively well during the preseason game against the Texans allowing a combined five receptions for 73 yards with two pass breakups by undrafted rookie Leon Jones. Just like in Seattle, it's going to be a tough room to stand out in with all the young players on the roster.
As for Lyons, it was an expected move to be made considering the Bears already have an established long snapper under contract in Patrick Scales.
