CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It may be easy for us to stay cool on a warm day, but not all pets can beat the heat.

A hot summer day may be a New Englander’s dream, but for pets, it means taking extra safety measures.

The National Humane Society says these safety tips are key to keeping your pet cool.:

    • Providing them with plenty of water and shade.
    • Limiting outdoor walks during the day when temperatures are hottest.
    • and never leave your pet in the car.

Laurie Sherman who travels the country in her van with her dog, says she finds plenty of time throughout the day to make sure her little one gets to cool off, “When it’s really hot like it has been the last few days I keep water bottles in my refrigerator and when she lays down on her bed, I put it against her belly.”

Laurie says, she also finds time to walk through air-conditioned stores along the roads like Lowe’s or Home Depot. Plenty of water and shade can help keep pets like this nice and cool during a heat wave.

Hot days for dogs could mean lots of time spent Indoors. Sheila Rafferty, who’s on a road trip with her dog, stopped in Springfield so her pup could cool off. “We’ve been traveling in the car with the air conditioning on and were making a stop after two hours you know we brought water for her keeping her in the shade for a few minutes then we’ll take her back another two more hours to Vermont,” she says.

The National Humane Society recommends keeping an eye on your pets in higher-than-usual temperatures. They say signs of a heat stroke include, excessive drooling and heavy panting.

If you notice your pet is acting out of the norm, reach out to a vet immediately. Vets also recommend finding different ways to keep your pets cool like making at-home pup-sicles or giving them a nice bath.
