First Baptist Church of Chillicothe celebrates 200 year anniversary

CHILLICOTHE — In 1824, the First Regular African Baptist Church of Christ in Chillicothe was established. Now, 200 years later the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe is celebrating its history and looking toward the future.

The church was created on July 13 by David Nickens, Elder William White and Rev. Nathan Cory with the purpose of creating an organized Baptist church.

Members wanted to work to help abolish slavery in America, something that wasn't done till 40 years later. The early congregation also worked to provide education for youth in the community by operating a school in the church.

Over the years the church has grown and changed locations adding a baptismal pool, Sunday school rooms, a convocation hall and more.

Members like Vicki Snow have seen the church change pastors over the years and said that each one has brought with them a new moment in history.

"We are what we are today because of them," said Snow.

Currently, the church is led by the Rev. Moses Edwards Jr. who was interested in the church due to its rich history.

"God has really blessed us," said Edwards.

With his growing congregation, he is working to bring back important parts of the church like the choir, women's ministry and more. He hopes to continue working with the church to honor the traditions of the past while also bringing them into a modern world.

"We are setting the foundation for the next generation," said Edwards.
