Local man celebrates turning 104 years old

CHILLICOTHE — Maybe it's something in the water or maybe it's just pure luck, whatever it is is keeping local man Robert Parker alive and having fun at 104 years old.

Born and raised in Ross County, Parker grew up locally and worked for the railroad which took him away from home a lot. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, riding motorcycles, and square dancing, something he said young people don't do much of these days.

"It was fun," said Parker of dancing.

During World War II he would join the Army and serve his country in Europe. Soon after returning home from the war, he got a job at the paper mill where he worked for over 35 years. He enjoyed this job as it let him stay closer to home and his family.

As he aged his family said Parker had a goal of making it to 100 years old. After reaching his goal he doesn't know what has kept him alive so long, but he is still enjoying life while he can.

He often jokes with his family and while he can no longer square dance like he did when he was younger he still likes to listen to music. Some of his favorite artists include Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash.

"I like any kind of music," said Parker.

Parker recently celebrated his birthday on July 25 with over 100 community members including his friends, family, and local military groups. he was honored with several proclamations from local and state government officials as well as the local color guard.

Looking back he has fond memories of traveling around Europe once out of the service and even going to Alaska, a place he said he would like to go back to if he was able. Family members also recall memories of traveling with Parker and having a good time together.

When asked if he has any advice for the younger generation he said to "stay off drugs."
