The Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library Summer Reading Program is almost here!

Kicking off on June 18 at 10:30 a.m. with the Gary Shelton Magic Show, our summer calendar is full of exciting events for our young readers.

On Tuesdays is our main event at 10:30 a.m. It’s open to all ages.

On Wednesdays at 11 a.m., we’ll have two programs happening at the same time: Story Time with Lee Lolkema for children 5 and younger, and our Pop-Up Program for children ages 6-12 that will feature a craft, presenter, or activity.

Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. will be a time just for teens as we host an activity for youth ages 12-18 that features crafts, games, and even an escape room.

Then on Fridays is is our Family Film Matinee at 2 p.m. Attendees can get some freshly popped popcorn while enjoying a family-friendly feature film.

New this year is a program for the whole family. Starting on Saturday, June 29, at 11 a.m., is our “Brunch with the Author” series.

Patrons are invited to join a local children’s author for some conversation, a book signing, and light refreshments, including coffee. Participants will learn what it takes to write a children’s book and how the author makes their story come to life.

The series will include three discussions featuring an author who addresses a different aspect of literature. The first event will be on Saturday, June 29, and feature author Kim Saunders, a Chowan County native who specializes in children’s literature and whose books explore friendship and imagination. She will discuss and read from her latest book, “Friends Forever.”

Our second speaker is local artist and illustrator Julia Townsend. She creates beautiful paintings that bring stories to life for readers both young and old. Discussing her work on the book “Zeynep: The Seagull of Galata Tower,” Townsend will outline her creative process and explain what it takes to bring together words, story and art. A brunch with Townsend will be held on Saturday, July 20, at 11 a.m.

Our final speaker is local author and Friends of the Library member Kathryn Louise Wood. On Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m., Wood will discuss her experiences writing literature for children and tweens like her popular Zephyr Stone mystery series.

Participants not only will get to meet the author but also join in a book launch event for her latest work, “Zephyr Stone and the Frosty Phantom.”

Each session is free and will include a book signing. Books will also be available for purchase from the author. Have a great week, and we hope to see you at the library.
