San Diego Highway-Side Diner Perry's Cafe Closing Its Doors After Nearly 40 Years In Business
After nearly four decades serving diner staples in San Diego, Perry's Cafe is set to close its door this summer to make way for a new residential building. Perry's Cafe has been serving the community near the junction of Interstates 5 and 8 in San Diego's Loma Portal/Old Town area since its inception in 1985. Founded by Greek immigrants Constantine "Costas" and Margaret Georgakopoulos, the cafe quickly established itself as a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike looking for classic American diner fare, generous portions, and friendly service. The cafe's iconic retro decor, featuring leather booths, a diner counter bar and nostalgic memorabilia, creates an ambiance that harkens back to a bygone era.

“MAGA Takeover at MCASD” by Dan Grossman
Under normal circumstances, it was the last place in the world where I would have expected to see a MAGA-themed exhibition. But that’s what I encountered at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in La Jolla. Nothing was normal now, of course, after MAGA Revolution 2.0. The...
Stick Figure sells out two nights at San Diego’s Rady Shell
If you were anywhere near The Rady Shell in San Diego last weekend and heard a massive wave of reggae bliss, you likely experienced Stick Figure, SOJA, and Little Stranger in action. The Rady Shell, a breathtaking outdoor amphitheater with a backdrop of the San Diego skyline, was the perfect setting for these incredible bands. The open-air venue felt as though the universe hit the “chill” button and dialed up the good vibes. With smooth rhythms and playful tunes, the night was a perfect escape — so laidback that even the seagulls appeared to be dancing along!
Lucky Israeli-Flagged Desserts at Sycuan Slots Tournament
SAN DIEGO – This past weekend I stayed at Sycuan Casino Resort on a reservation owned by one branch of the Kumeyaay people. My favorite slot machine is in the non-smoking section. It is named Aztec Temple and is a “penny slot.” I like this machine since I am a graduate of San Diego State University, whose team nicknames are the Aztecs, and I always get more than I put in (fingers crossed I don’t jinx myself for next time).

Free: The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival is a festive fall favorite
Free entry; the Wine & Beer Garden is ticketed; Sept. 28 and 29. 160+ artists displaying their work, activities for kids, music, food, pet adoptions, and more. SUMMER ENDS, as it must, around the third week of September, but the outdoor art festival scene keeps humming, at least in certain parts of California. La Jolla Art and Wine Festival is one of the bold biggies on this beautiful, keep-the-vibes-high September scene, a reminder that the alfresco pursuits of summertime don't need to conclude when autumn arrives. The 2024 festival will take place over the final weekend of September — that would be Sept. 28 and 29 — and entry is free. That said, you'll want money for the Wine & Beer Garden, which is ticketed, and for any food purchases, too. And, of course, art, should you fall for a painting or photograph while strolling through the airy affair. Over 160 artists will be there, promising a vast and vibrant array of art-strong splendor.
