A man fired a gun into the ground and out of a window at a Chula Vista home Friday, prompting an hours-long SWAT standoff.

After negotiations, the suspect exited the home in the 500 block of D Street before 8 p.m., surrendering to Chula Vista police without incident. While the investigation is still unfolding, officials reported on social media, for now the suspect is in custody on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm.

The gunfire erupted shortly after 12:30 p.m. after officers arrived, following up on a request to check on the man’s welfare, according to police.

There were no reports of injuries, and the shooter – described as a shirtless man in his early 40s – did not appear to be targeting officers or anyone else with the gunfire, according to a police statement.

After the man ignored repeated orders to exit the home and surrender, special weapons and tactics personnel were summoned, police said.

Officers told residents of nearby homes to remain indoors until the situation could be resolved. The block was re-opened after the man’s surrender.
