A 57-year-old man died Friday morning while standing on the emergency shoulder of Interstate 275, Springdale police and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Darren Hayes, of Miamisburg, died as a result of a crash that occurred on the exit ramp from eastbound I-275 to Springfield Pike.

At approximately 10:17 a.m., Hayes' 2014 Kenworth truck became disabled. He parked his truck on the right shoulder of the highway, off the travel portion. He then exited his car and stood alongside it.

A 2023 Volvo tractor and semi-truck was traveling on the exit ramp when the car exited the travel portion of the roadway and entered the emergency shoulder. The Volvo collided with the disabled Kenworth.

The impact of the collision knocked Hayes to the ground, and he became trapped under the Kenworth's right rear tires.

The Springdale Fire Department responded to the scene where Hayes was pronounced dead.

Keith Schnur, a 62-year-old from Guilford, Indiana, is the driver of the Volvo. He was not injured.

The Traffic Safety Unit of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.
