NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — He’s heading to the biggest job interview of his life.

Illinois State All-American tight end Cam Grandy, from tiny Benson, Illinois is heading to the Cincinnati Bengals rookie mini-camp this week.

“It is a big job interview. I felt the same way at the Hula Bowl and Shrine Bowl, a job interview to put something on tape. This is bigger than that now that I have my foot in the door,” Grandy said. “I’ll leave it all on the field. Do all I can to make the 53.”

Grandy is hoping to make the 53-man roster of an NFL team and Cincinnati is giving him the first look. The Bengals signed him after he wasn’t picked in the NFL draft last month.

He came to ISU last year after four years at Division II Missouri Western hoping to give NFL scouts a chance to see him play.

“I transferred to ISU to get this opportunity. Being from a Division II school, it’s hard to make the NFL or get your foot in the door,” said Grandy. “I came to ISU with the expectation to have that opportunity. The (past) year I had was a good one. It ended up working out for me.”

It was an excellent season for Grandy who led all tight ends in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with 63 catches for 612 yards. The All-American also scored three touchdowns.

Now the former Fieldcrest High School quarterback is hoping to make an NFL roster as a tight end and make his childhood dreams of playing pro football come true.

“It’s all I ever wanted to do going back to me and my dad throwing the ball in the yard,” Grandy said. “Coming from a small town like Benson, Illinois. Always playing backyard ball with friends. I always envisioned being in the NFL. Now to have that opportunity come to life is awesome.”
