A Saint Bernard Rottweiler mix puppy with a rare form of cancer has found hope in a local farm in Cincinnati, Ohio. The pup was only one week old when she went through surgery to have a mass removed. After looking into it, the vets diagnosed the canine with melanoma, which is quite rare among puppies so young.
Puppy with rare form of cancer finds hope at Cincinnati farm
Puppy Dora was only one week old when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. She had to undergo surgery to have a tumor removed. However, when the tumor was sent off for further examination, it was discovered that the canine had melanoma . While melanoma might not be uncommon in dogs, it is unheard of in dogs as young as Dora.
Unfortunately, Dora’s family was left unsure after hearing the news. They didn’t have the budget to cover her treatment costs, leaving them only with the option of putting down the Saint Bernard Rottweiler mix pup. This is when Foreverland Farm stepped in, taking the canine under its care. It is a non-profit animal sanctuary based just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. They provide abused, slaughter-bound, neglected, and abandoned animals a safe home to call their own.
Brittney Kane of Foreverland Farm also noted that they were surprised to hear Dora’s diagnosis. A puppy being born with cancer is quite rare, and they hadn’t heard of any cases like hers. Dora isn’t cancer-free as of yet and will need another surgery to rid her of the little bit of tumor still left. However, it hasn’t grown since the first surgery, so they are hopeful another surgery and a vaccine will do the trick.
According to Fox 28 , Dora is a happy-go-lucky pup who loves being out and about. She gets her name from the animated series “ Dora the Explorer .” After the surgery and the melanoma vaccine, the canine should live a long, healthy life filled with adventures. However, her treatment will cost about $10,000, so they have set up a GoFundMe to help with the cancer treatment costs.
