A 6-year-old girl is in critical condition at Cincinnati Children's after police said she was hit by a car on River Road Tuesday evening.

Police said a 48-year-old woman was driving a 2017 Dodge Journey eastbound just after 5 p.m. when she hit a girl trying to cross the road. Officials said the girl was alert and conscious when she was taken to the hospital, but said she is listed as being in critical condition.

The driver did stop and cooperated with a police investigation. Police said excessive speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in the crash.

Officials blocked off River Road between Bender Road and Darby Lane for multiple hours to investigate the scene.

A lieutenant at the scene said it appeared the girl was coming from the river. A parent or guardian was there when police arrived.

Any witnesses to the crash are asked to call CPD's Traffic Unit at 513-352-2514.
