Essen, a popular vegan restaurant in Over-the-Rhine, will permanently close its doors in late July. The restaurant, known for plant-based fare such as seitan Philly cheesesteaks, lentil Cincinnati chili and a barbecue jackfruit sandwich, was opened in 2018 by the mother and daughter Patricia Bittner and Lida Bilokur.

In 2021, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, named Essen's bagel and lox one of the best faux-fish dishes in the country. The bagel was topped with vegan cream cheese, marinated tomato lox, capers, onion and dill.

Along with its take-out spot on Elm Street, Essen was also the unofficial kitchen for the Orbit Room, a jazz club located next door.

"It has been a pleasure serving our many regular customers," the owners wrote on social media. "We are grateful for the support you have given us these past 5+years."

The Enquirer reached out for a comment regarding the reason for the closure but did not hear back before publication.
