Patrick Mahomes has a unique reason to love the latest roster move made by the Cincinnati Bengals

Of the three free agents the Cincinnati Bengals signed on Friday , cornerback Nate Brooks caught the attention of the NFL player Ja'Marr Chase refuses to say by name .

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes caught the news on X/Twitter and gave a "Let's go!!!" as a reaction.

Why would the quarterback of the Chiefs be celebrating a training camp signing made by the only team to have beaten him in the playoffs since the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Well, Mahomes and the newest Bengals corner go way back.

Bengals added a former teammate of Patrick Mahomes

Long before Mahomes and Brooks made it to the NFL, they were teammates at Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. The Whitehouse High School football program has produced three NFL players in its history: Former Washington Commanders tight end Dylan Cantrell, Brooks, and Mahomes. That's it.

While Cantrell and Mahomes stayed teammates in college at Texas Tech, Brooks played for North Texas and began his NFL career two years after Mahomes in 2019. The 27-year old cornerback has bounced around the NFL quite a bit in just five years, but was most recently named to the All-UFL Team this summer after a productive 2024 season with the Michigan Panthers.

Getting back to the NFL wasn't a given, so Mahomes is obviously happy for his former teammate getting another shot even if it's with a rival squad.

The Brooks signing was a bit of a surprise for Bengals fans after director of player personnel told media members earlier in the week that a veteran cornerback signing wasn't likely in the plans.

“Are we going to sign a veteran? No, probably not," Tobin said Monday . "I like what we’ve got there. We’ve got young guys that can run and cover who have a lot of upside to them. We’ve got some new guys working in there, and it will be exciting to see how they do. Do I feel like we have an immediate need for a veteran to make our team? No.”

Whatever Tobin thought five days ago means nothing now that Brooks is on the roster. He's unlikely to make the initial 53-man roster at the end of August, but his presence should give the defense enough depth to make it through the preseason.

If Brooks does stay on the team, perhaps he'll meet Mahomes again on the field in Week 2 of the regular season when Cincinnati visits Kansas City.
