Uptown Circleville’s leadership met June 26 in Council Chambers to plan for their next set of upcoming activities. Having completed the unveiling of the Town Clock and Gateway Sculpture just eight days ago, it was time to look ahead.

President Jeff Rawlings welcomed City Councilman Tom Duvall who gave an update on the re-striping of Court Street, changing it from four lanes to three. The project was initiated by homeowners and shop owners on Court Street who fear for their safety when trying to enter or exit their vehicles using their driver-side doors when parked.

ODOT regulations allow for the three lane configuration (one lane going north, one south and a middle lane for left turns) when traffic counts are less than 15,000 vehicles per day. While Main Street (already three lanes) has a daily count of 10,139 vehicles per day, Court Street has only 7,456.

The parallel parking on Court Street will not change. Nose-in diagonal parking, used on Mound Street by the Post Office, is not being considered. Nevertheless, an interesting conversation followed about how the City of Pittsburgh uses back-in diagonal parking, which allows the driver to have clear sight lines when pulling out, thus virtually eliminating all accidents.

When the re-striping is completed, there will be three lanes on Court Street all through town., just like Main Street. The cost of the project is approximately $60,000. Service Director Jim Stanley has completed the design and engineering work; the project is ready to go if approved by Council. Anyone interested in making comments should attend Council’s next meeting on Tuesday, July 2nd at 7 p.m. at 127 South Court Street.

Shawna Hartsaugh, representing the Eagles, spoke about plans for their Christmas Parade and Santa House, which will take place on Saturday, December 7. Later, Linda Chancey introduced a new concept — to have the Santa House located at Ted Lewis Park.

The Christmas lighting could be moved to the park, also. There’s more parking and a shelter house at the park. It was noted that the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony and entertainment will take place on the same day at Pumpkin Show Park. This would require some planning for moving the crowd after the tree lighting to Ted Lewis Park for the Santa House. Having the two events on different dates was also considered.

Hartsaugh also introduced a new fundraising idea, a “Mrs. Roper Pub Crawl,” where there are prizes for participants who dress like the characters from the TV series, “Three’s Company.” The idea came from Chillicothe who put this on last year. The event will take advantage of Circleville’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) which allows patrons to carry open containers of adult beverages from one establishment to another.

The Uptown Classic 3 on 3 Tournament is set to take place on Saturday, July 20th, 2024. The street basketball festival will take place on North Court Street, from Main to High Streets. The 3 on 3 tournament welcomes players ranging from amateurs to elites, offering a division for every skill level. Registration for the tournament is now open and can be completed online atuptowncircleville.org or through the TeamSideline event platform.

The 3 on 3 tournament offers court sponsorship opportunities for local businesses. Anyone interested in being a sponsor or a volunteer, for this or any other event, can contact Uptown Circleville leadership at admin@uptowncircleville.org.
