Do you need a place to sleep? Here’s a map of shelters in Albuquerque

The question of how many beds are available for people experiencing homelessness has emerged as a sticking point as cities across the country grapple with how to tackle the issue.

With this in mind, City Desk ABQ called around to 14 shelters identified by the City of Albuquerque and the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness to ask about their capacity, what populations they serve and what steps one needs to take in order to stay there.

Although how many beds are available on any given night is difficult to pin down, the review found that there are generally 1,537 for individuals and 89 rooms for families, some of which are transitional housing and others which simply offer a place to stay for the night.

The Point in Time Count — which is generally considered to be an undercount due to obstacles in accurately counting people living on the fringes — found 2,740 homeless people in Albuquerque on one night in January. About half of those — 1,231 — were on the streets, 1,289 were in emergency shelters and 220 were in transitional housing.

However, the mayor recently estimated that there are 5,000 people experiencing homelessness throughout the city.

Together, Gateway West — formerly the Westside Emergency Housing Center — and Joy Junction can house a little over 1,000 people on a walk-in emergency basis. The rest of the shelters are geared toward specific populations, including LGBTQ youth, families and domestic violence survivors. Some require a referral or an interview before a person can stay there.

The map below lists the shelters, and includes requirements to stay there and how to contact them.
