The historic Frederick Apartments is at 1001 University Avenue in Columbia, Missouri. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 2013. It's known as the Frederick Building today.

The architectural style is Late 19th Century and Early 20th Century Revivals: Classical Revival. The foundation is concrete and the walls are brick. The architect was David Frederick "Fred" Wallace. Wallace also designed the Jackson County Courthouse in Independence.

The building is near the University of Missouri. It was built in 1928 and housed 39 apartment units. This historic building is only one of four that remain in the area. Visit here for interior views of the building.

This apartment building honors Frederick Niedermeyer Jr., a World War I pilot. He lost his life in a plane crash in 1925. His father, F.W. Niedermeyer had the building constructed as a memorial to his son. Frederick Jr. was one of the first pilots in Mid-Missouri. He was also an expert in acrobatic flying.

Frederick Jr. was a lieutenant when he left the service in 1919. He joined an aerobatic flying group known as the Carrolton Aero Club in Missouri. After crash-landing his plane in Centralia, Missouri, he was fortunate to walk away without serious injuries. However, while performing a stint in 1922, he was killed in Dayton, Ohio in a crash.

This building is important because of its architecture. Interestingly, the architect, Wallace, wasn't even 30 years old when the building was constructed. Also, he was a brother-in-law to Harry Truman and was living with him when he designed the apartment building.

Owners of the building began restoring it in 2013. This building is one of the earliest urban buildings in the city.
