New venture in Topeka aims to help young people gain confidence in social skills
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A new venture in Topeka aims to help young people learn how to be good company. Capitol Cotillion will be held at The Beacon September through April, offering monthly lessons for middle school boys and girls in manners, interpersonal skills, ballroom dance and more. Founder Valerie Thornburg and choreographer Bri Brazil joined Eye on Northeast Kansas to talk about the program.
Commanding General discusses Fort Riley
Maj. Gen. Monte Rone told a Military Affairs Council Breakfast audience in Junction City this week that Fort Riley can't be a secret. Rone noted that his concern is always the single soldiers finding opportunities to do things, "finding unique ways that we can take care of all our Soldiers, especially single soldiers." Coffeyville Begins Flushing Water Lines
The City of Coffeyville begins cleaning water lines with free chlorine residual. The City began today and will go all through August. During this period of time, residents may notice some chlorine tastes and odors in the water. There is no cause for alarm, and this is being done purely as a precautionary measure, and as part of their ongoing efforts to provide residents with the safest possible drinking water.

After being named one of four finalists for a city manager job in Manhattan, Kansas, Springfield City Manager Jason Gage has withdrawn his candidacy. Gage has worked for the city of Springfield for six years. Gage was hired in 2018 after working in Salina, Kansas, for 18 years also as city manager. Overland Park earmarks funds for sidewalk replacement in these 2 neighborhoods
Overland Park is planning to replace the sidewalks in two neighborhoods this year in the city’s northern half. City Commissioners will hear an update, next week, from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and City staff regarding the ongoing Manhattan Levee Project. The first phase of the project is nearly complete, and city staff are looking for direction on how to proceed with the next phases as projected costs have increased over $15 million since the 2019 project partnership agreement.
CAMPBELL: Grasshopper populations in Kansas remain elevated
Weather patterns can have a significant impact on grasshopper populations year to year. Hot, dry summers increase the survival of nymphs and adult grasshoppers, leading to increased egg production during the growing season. Cool, wet weather promotes fungal pathogens that can reduce egg and nymph survival, but if the following spring is warm and wet, egg hatching will increase, and more nymphs survive. So, several years of hot, dry summers followed by warm, wet springs can eventually lead to large populations of grasshoppers in some regions.
