Fair Bluff Watermelon Festival set for Saturday, July 27
FAIR BLUFF, N.C. (WECT) - The Fair Bluff Watermelon Festival is inviting the community to celebrate at Riverside Drive this Saturday, July 27. Registration for contests runs from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The big watermelon weigh-in and awards presentation will be at 10 a.m., the youth and adult watermelon eating contests will be at 10:30 a.m. and the youth and adult quality watermelon awards presentation will be at 11 a.m. You can register online for contests until 5 p.m. on Friday.
Corman Railroad Awarded State Grant
R.J. Corman Railroad has been awarded a state grant to improve the railway between Columbus County, Mullins and Conway. The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Rail Division this week announced $1.8 million in 50-50 matching grant funding to improve rail infrastructure on three short line railroads, including Corman, Aberdeen Carolina and Western, and Alexander Railroad Co. This grant funding is in addition to $10.2 million in grants to 12 short line railroads, announced in December 2023 under the same program.

Saturday is Watermelon Festival Day in Fair Bluff. Columbuscountynews.com will be livestreaming the parade at 12:30 p.m. with commentary by Darrell Jackson. This weekend will be your last chance to visit several of the century-old buildings downtown. Much of the downtown area is set to be razed due to flood damage. There will also be a guest book where you can share your memories of Fair Bluff as it used to be.
