The 16th Annual BBQ Cook-Off
This year marked the 16th Annual BBQ Cookoff at the Elks Lodge. The BBQ Cook-Off started as a small locals-only contest, later growing into a district Elks BBQ-Cook-Off. There used to be about eight teams competing in the early years. According to member, Carl McBee, the team started the competition with the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) seven years ago, and since then, the Cameron Mo BBQ has been able to grow to include over forty teams for the Cameron Elks Barbecue Cook-Off. You are not required to be an elk to participate, it has always been available to everyone.
Celebrating the Opening of Pocket of Posies Floral and Gifts
Pocket of Posies held their grand opening ribbon cutting on Friday, July 19th, at noon. Emily Spencer and Cassie Bottorff celebrated with the community and family, starting with some sweet treats, a floral arrangement giveaway, and a thirty-dollar gift card. With lots of local support from the community, over a dozen members showed up for the grand opening at 311 W. Grand Ave.
Update on CHS Gym Reconstruction
Cameron High School determined at the close of the school year that it was time to refurbish the gym and open up its floors to the public as a fundraiser. July has arrived, and things are moving forward. The bleachers and the gym’s flooring have both been torn out and removed. After the gym’s uneven spots were repaired and the floors were ground smooth, the plywood installation process started. The procedure of installing maple floors in the gym will start when the plywood is placed over the floors. “Essentially this process will still be about a 3–4-week process for them to finish the floor,” says Superintendent Matt Robinson.
Phantom Regiment comes to Cameron
Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps traveled to Cameron to practice at the Dave Goodwin Field for their show on July 15th, in Olathe, Kansas, later departing to Oklahoma for their next performance. In the scorching heat, over 180 members flooded the field to perform their latest piece, “Mynd” involving color guard, trumpet, mellophones, drumline, and props The performance incorporates different parts of the brain (the left and right brain, movements like the performance depicts the right part of the brain, where the dances and music tend to show raw emotions, creativity, and artistic ability, while the left side of the brain shows the more analytical and logical way. Both parts of the brain are dissected throughout the show.
