Raw sewage spilled into a tributary of Reedy Branch on July. 18.

SMITHFIELD — An equipment failure caused a small sewage spill on Thursday near Clayton, the county’s Public Utilities Department reported.

An air-release valve on a pressure sewer main failed, spilling about 3,000 gallons of raw sewage into a tributary of Reedy Branch.

The spill occurred near 7531 U.S. 70 Business, which is near the highway’s interchange with U.S. 70.

The county has reported the spill to the state’s Division of Water Resources, which is reviewing the matter.

For more information, call the Public Utilities Department at 919-989-5075.
