Baseball: Former St. Cloud State Pitcher Ethan Lanthier was selected in the MLB Draft on Tuesday. The New York Mets selected the former Husky in the 12th round of the draft. Lanthier spent two seasons with SCSU (2022-23) and earned an All-NSIC first team nod in his first season. He pitched over 68 innings during his time for the Huskies, sporting a 3.67 ERA. Lanthier transferred up to division one baseball last season, pitching for the Kansas Jayhawks.

AMATEUR BASEBALL: Howard Lake falls to Maple Lake in NSL matchup
HOWARD LAKE- Maple Lake Lakers came to town for a NSL league game against Howard Lake Orphans. It was the Lakers beating the Orphans 10-4 in the battle of the lakes. Jared Koch was the starting pitcher for the Orphans facing off against a Lakers lineup that won the Class C state championship last year.
Novak and Herrera Earn CSC Academic All-America Honors
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A pair of student-athletes from St. Cloud State Wrestling earned one of the nation's top academic honors with junior Nick Novak (New Prague, Minn.) and graduate Anthony Herrera (Stansbury Park, Utah) being named to the 2023-24 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American ® Men's At-Large team. Novak earned All-America Second Team recognition while Herrera earned his way to the Third Team.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Former St. Cloud State Baseball standout Ethan Lanthier (Northfield, Minn.) was selected by the New York Mets in the 2024 MLB Draft on Tuesday. Lanthier, who pitched the 2024 season with Kansas (D-I, Big 12), was selected by the Mets in the 12th round (353rd overall).
Lakers tied at fifth as regular season nears end
The Maple Lake Lakers are on the home stretch of the North Star League regular season, which officially comes to an end on Sunday, July 21. The Lakers currently sit in a tie for fifth with Litchfield and with only a few games to go a lot could happen in the standings, making the final three games critical. Hutchinson and Buffalo are separated by only one game at the top of the standings and play each other twice before the season is over with Delano hot on their tails for the top spot. The bottom-five teams are likely set unless Howard Lake gets hot and jumps Dassel-Cokato. Once the dust settles on the regular season and the play-in tournament the remaining eight teams will face off in Dassel to determine who goes to state.

COKATO – Steve Schmitt held the visiting Diamond Devils to two runs in seven innings to pick up the win, and the Kernels had 22 baserunners in a 5-2 victory over Maple Plain Wednesday, July 10. The good news: the Kernels had 13 hits, seven walks, and two HBP.
Rud ‘can’t wait to jump in,’ returns to St. Cloud State as new men’s hockey assistant coach
St. Cloud State has announced the addition of Eric Rud as an assistant coach for the men’s hockey team. A 25-year veteran of the coaching world with head coaching experience, Rud returns to St. Cloud for the third time after previous stints as an assistant coach with the men’s team from 2005 to 2010 and as the head coach of the women’s team from 2014 to 2019. Rud most recently served as the head coach of the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL, his second stint as a head coach in the nation’s top junior hockey league.

Legion Post 131 baseball team wins playoff opener
Maple Lake Post 131 legion baseball traveled to Litchfield on Monday, July 15 to open the playoffs. Litchfield hit well early and capitalized on a couple Irish errors to score four runs in the bottom of the first. The Irish got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Danny Reilley lined a two-run missile over the left field wall cutting the deficit in half at 4-2. Litchfield added a run in the bottom of the fifth. The score remained 5-2 with Maple Lake down to its final at bat. With the season on the line, Reilley opened the inning with a walk, followed by three Irish singles by Wyatt Briemon, Jarrett Faue and Andy Schmitz plating a run and loading the bases for Gabe Jurgens. Jurgens hit a deep fly ball to right center for a two-run double game to tie the game at five. Nick Jost followed with a ground ball misplayed by the Dragon second base that scored Schmitz for a 6-5 lead.
Eight Huskies Added to NCHC Academic All-Conference
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey had eight freshmen and first-year transfers added to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Academic All-Conference Team, as announced by the league on Tuesday. The group of eight Huskies were among 62 newcomers added to total 174 Academic All-Conference and 106 Distinguished Scholar Athletes league-wide for the 2023-24 season.
