This summer’s Traverse City Cherry Whiskey Fest will offer exclusive sips
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - If you’re a whiskey fan who loves being the first to try new sips, then this year’s Cherry Whiskey Fest might have double the fun for you. Traverse City Whiskey Co. is hosting its fifth-annual Cherry Whiskey Fest on Saturday, July 13. The festival will begin at noon at The Stillhouse, 201 E. 14th St. Tickets are $35 at the door, or you can find them at a lower price on the website here.
Milo Karhu
Milo Jon Karhu, 85, of Lake Ann, Michigan and The Villages Florida, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at his home with his loving family by his side. His passing came just a week after the unexpected death of his beloved wife, Wilma “Billie Jean” Karhu, likely due to a broken heart. The two were inseparable soulmates, deeply in love and rarely apart. They are now reunited in heaven.

U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City welcomes new commanding officer
TRAVERSE CITY — Tuesday was the change of command at the Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, a ceremony that happens every two years. It was an emotional goodbye for one commanding office and the start of a new challenge for another. “We have a short amount of time here, and really all we try to do is try to make the place a little bit better than we found it. So if some of the things that we worked on over the past two years makes this a better Air Station for our members and their families to live at, then I did my job,” said Captain Andrew Schanno, former commanding officer. Schannohas served as commanding officer of the Traverse City Air Station since 2022 and will now report to the Navy’s Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island for a new role.
Ferris State and Lake Superior State men’s hockey teams to play in Traverse City this fall
CADILLAC - The Ferris State University and Lake Superior State men’s ice hockey squads will compete in Traverse City this fall as the Bulldogs take on the Lakers in the 2024 Superior Ice Showdown: Traverse City Takeover. The two Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals will hit the ice at the Centre Ice Arena on Nov. 16 with puck drop set for 6:07 p.m. The historic event will feature the Bulldogs and the Lakers in a highly anticipated CCHA battle, marking the first time college hockey has been played in Traverse City. ”We’re thrilled to bring Bulldog Hockey and the CCHA to Traverse City and look forward to making this event a success,” FSU athletics director Steve Brockelbank said. “This game will provide us with an opportunity to both showcase our program and university to the fans and all our alumni in the Traverse City area.”

Brenda Carr, 73, of Grayling
Brenda Louise Carr, 73 of Grayling, passed away on June 29, 2024 at home with her family. Brenda was born in Wyandotte, MI to the late Marshall and Sarah “Sally” (Folgado) Granger on April 12, 1951. She was the second of seven children and very close to her siblings. She moved up to Grayling in the late 70’s where she met the love of her life Allen “Chauncey” Carr and together they raised three daughters. Brenda truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; working on puzzles, shopping, online slot games, chatting with friends, listening to music (subjecting her family to Roger Whittaker cause he was “The Man”), playing cards and mostly spending time with her family whether it be at family gatherings or an all night “Granger Girls” coffee and card party.
Next Phase of Grandview Parkway Construction Starts Monday
Segment 2 of the East Front Street/Grandview Parkway construction starts Monday, July 8, with work planned around the clock for the first week. The Michigan Department of Transportation and contractor Team Elmer's will be working on Grandview Parkway between East Front Street and Division Street from July to November. Residents question competence of Mayfield Township Board after lawsuit
Residents of Mayfield Township have been voicing their concerns in regard to the competence of the Township Board, following a court ruling on June 14 where Mayfield Township was ordered to pay the plaintiff a total sum of $152,741.92. The amount was awarded to Lapeer Aviation Inc. (LAI) after the Township acted in bad faith when they had declared that their contract with LAI was terminated and had left fees unpaid. According to court documents, the Honorable Judge Michael Nolan awarded attorney fees in the sum of $101,828.50 and an additional amount of $50,913.42 be paid to LAI for airport management fees, facility repairs and maintenance.
