Paul Finebaum Dumps Cold Water on Clemson's Playoff Hopes with Fiery Dabo Swinney Jab

Clemson Tigers head coach, Dabo Swinney, recently shared his opinion on the new College Football Playoff format. It apparently didn't sit well with ESPN's Paul Finebaum, as the popular analyst blasted Swinney over his comments.
On Thursday, Finebaum double-downed on his take during a segment on First Take . Paul Finebaum didn't hold back, as he dumped cold water all over Clemson's playoff hopes. It's safe to say, Finebaum doesn't have high hopes for the Tigers this season.
"He hasn't been to the playoffs in four years, and he's not going this year. So Dabo, just get over it. You're going to be watching it from home."
It's been a tough go for the Clemson football program as of late. The Tigers haven't won a championship since 2018. Additionally, as Paul Finebaum pointed out, it's been four years since Dabo Swinney led his team to a playoff appearance.
On top of that, the Tigers haven't been nearly as competitive in recruiting as they used to be. Swinney has voiced his displeasure with the NIL since it started back in 2021. That defiance to adapt to the new ways of college sports might be why Clemson has fallen off the map in recent years. Here's what he said about the NIL back in March 2024, per Cody Nagel of 247 Sports.
"I've always said I'm against the professionalization of college athletics. The best thing for coaches in kind of the world we're in right now is for them to be employees. The worst thing is for them to be employees. That's not a world that we want for 18-year-olds.
"I think we've lost our way and we need to — I'm all for the NIL. I think NIL is awesome. I'm all for enhancing the scholarship however we want, but I also understand the reality that 98% of these kids aren't going to play in the NFL. We need to educate our young people in this society. Nobody talks about the value of an education anymore."
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney talks during the Clemson football Media Outing & Open House at the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex in Clemson, S.C. Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
The good news is, Dabo Swinney is still considered a good coach. Since taking over as the Clemson head coach, he's led the Tigers to 14 winning seasons out of his 16 years with the team. He built a two-time championship team as well. So, it's not like Swinney is some sort of bum.
We'll see if the Clemson Tigers can prove Paul Finebaum wrong this year. Dabo Swinney's squad has an uphill battle ahead though, as they kick off the season in Week 1 against Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs.
