Clemson football's Caden Story charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession

CLEMSON — Clemson football defensive tackle Caden Story was charged Sunday with possession of marijuana.

According to Pickens County court records, the redshirt sophomore was charged with possessing 28 grams (one ounce) or less. It is Story's first offense, and the charge is classified as a misdemeanor. His case, which was filed Tuesday, is listed as criminal, and he has to pay $615 in fines/costs.

If Story is convicted, he "must be imprisoned not more than 30 days or fined not less than $100 nor more than $200," per South Carolina Code of Laws section 44-53-370(d)(4).

A Clemson's athletic department spokesperson said the school had no comment regarding Story's charges.

Story will not be suspended immediately from all athletic activity since he wasn't arrested for/criminally charged with any felony offense; sports wagering, gambling, game fixing; illegal possession of a weapon; or criminally sexual conduct. Despite the NCAA no longer testing Division I athletes for cannabis products, marijuana is illegal in South Carolina.

According to the Clemson athlete handbook, a player who is arrested and/or charged with a drug-related crime will be subject to drug-testing under the Clemson University Athletic Department Use/Misuse Program . For all misdemeanor charges/convictions, the coach will recommend, within seven days, a course of action, and upon approval by the designated CUAD administrator, give out sanctions.

Story is the third Clemson football player to receive criminal changes this year. Defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart was charged Feb. 6 with unlawful possession of a firearm on university property, but his weapons charge was dismissed . Wide receiver Noble Johnson was charged Feb. 19 with reckless driving after being involved in a car accident.

A native of Lanett, Alabama, Story appeared in 11 games with no starts for Clemson and recorded one tackle over two seasons. He received a notable position change during spring practices, switching from defensive tackle to end.
