After Recent Visit, Virginia Lineman Calls Clemson 'Different'

Jaishaun Offutt camped at one school over the summer and it was Clemson.

The rising high school senior, out of John Handley (Winchester, VA), made his first ever visit to campus the first week of June to work out for offensive line coach Matt Luke.

“I really enjoyed it,” Offutt told The Clemson Insider. “I came down a day early so I got the tour around. I liked the campus. We just toured around the football facility part but it was really crazy because the training room, it was bigger than I expected. I also forgot that there was a barbershop in there too. So when I happened to walk past that it was crazy to see that.”

It was an experience that was different compared to some of the other camps Offutt has attended in the past.

“It’s different because there’s no times and it’s just small group work and agility work,” he said. “There’s no 40 times, broad jumping, or things like that. They’re just straight hands on. They go right into coaching. It’s not wasting an hour sitting there sitting around just getting tested. You just go on in right there and it’s just getting the work.”

Offutt had planned on working out at Virginia, Maryland and James Madison this summer, but an injury nixed those plans. With Clemson being the only school he was able to get to, the young offensive lineman was grateful he got to get coached up by Luke.

“He’s really energetic, he’s hands on. He directs you,” Offutt said. “He demands a lot in the stuff that he’s telling you. There’ll be some little thing that if I applied it to the next rep, it was actually working. So the feedback he’s giving you is great feedback and he just wants you to be the best player.”

Offutt has still been hearing from Luke since his workout and an offer has been discussed. However, Luke has told him he needs to see more.

“He talked to me and said he’s seen a lot of potential,” said Offutt. “He sees the good things I have, but there’s also some things that he would like to see me improve on. He gave me a little bit of tips and he just wants to see a little bit into the season.”

And Offutt absolutely plans on putting in that work, and he is hoping at some point, that offer from the Tigers will come.

“It would mean a lot because in a small town like Winchester, Virginia, there’s not a lot of people that get opportunities like that,” Offutt added. “So getting an opportunity from a school like Clemson, that would mean a lot to me.”
