National Outlet says These Clemson Players Have Lot to Prove

One national outlet says these particular members of Clemson’s receiving corps have plenty to prove heading into the upcoming campaign.

CBS Sports highlighted Clemson wideouts Troy Stellato and Adam Randall among the college football players with the most to prove in fall camp – or, as CBS Sports put it, “players who need a strong showing in fall camp for a variety of reasons.”

“Whether they are high-profile transfers trying to make an immediate impact, or program stalwarts looking for a breakout season, each of these players have something to prove,” CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer wrote.

Here’s what Hummer had to say about Stellato, a redshirt junior entering his fourth year at Clemson, and Randall, a junior going into his third year as a Tiger:

Clemson struggled to stretch the field last year, ranking No. 128 nationally in average air yards per throw. Part of that is on QB Cade Klubnik. Part of it is on the O-line. But many of the deficiencies in the pass game can be traced to less-than-stellar wide receiver play. That’s why Stellato and Randall — Clemson’s lead outside receivers now that Beaux Collins transferred to Notre Dame — are in the spotlight.

The Tigers need those two to step up after sub-par 2023 efforts that saw Stellato (337 yards, 1 TD, 55.6 PFF grade) and Randall (250 yards, 58.6 PFF grade) fail to make a big impact. They’ll need to step up this fall, too. Touted true freshmen TJ Moore (No. 21 overall) and Bryant Wesco (No. 57 overall) are on campus and will be pushing for immediate playing time. Randall and Stellato need to be better for Clemson’s sake, and for their own, as they could easily be passed by first-year freshmen.

Stellato, who has battled injuries throughout his time at Clemson, missed the last five practices of the spring recovering from shoulder surgery. He had surgery to repair his labrum in his left shoulder, which he tore during the Tigers’ November 8, 2023, win over North Carolina. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder missed almost all of his first two years at Clemson due to injuries, and then last summer, he pulled his hamstring just before camp started and missed all of fall camp.

Despite being banged up last season, Stellato finished the season with 38 catches for 321 yards and a touchdown. Though he was hurt against UNC, he still tallied a career-high 50 yards on six receptions. The only game he missed last year was the season-opener at Duke, as he was still nursing his hamstring.

Injuries have also impacted Randall, leading to some inconsistency in his performances on the field, though he is now fully healthy with an opportunity to make a much bigger impact in 2024. The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder has 32 catches for 378 yards over his first two years, with what was arguably his best performance to date coming in the Tigers’ comeback win over Kentucky in the Gator Bowl when Randall caught five passes for 46 yards.

A former national top-125 prospect from Myrtle Beach, Randall posted 22 receptions for 250 yards across 13 games (five starts) in 2023.
