Mafah Names Some Freshmen Impressing Him in Fall Camp

There’s no shortage of newcomers making a strong impression on Phil Mafah so far in fall camp.

The veteran Clemson running back met with the media following Monday’s practice and spoke about some of the true freshmen who have been standing out to him early in camp.

“A lot of them, honestly,” Mafah said. “(Linebacker) Sammy Brown on defense. Offensively, (wide receiver Bryant) Wesco. (Wide receiver) T.J. Moore’s looking great. (Running back) David (Eziomume) is looking great. I really feel like all of our freshmen have taken leaps. Our tight end, Christian (Bentancur), he’s looking really good.”

Moore and Bentancur enrolled at Clemson this summer, while Brown, Wesco and Eziomume were midyear enrollees who arrived on campus in January.

“Since they’ve gotten here, being midyears, I’ve definitely seen them progress and get better over these past few months,” Mafah said. “So, I’m really proud of them.”

As for the aforementioned Eziomume who’s with Mafah in Clemson’s running back room, Mafah is already seeing the maturation process take place with Eziomume, a former four-star and top-250 national prospect from Georgia.

“He’s just matured,” Mafah said. “Coming from high school to college is a big transition, and I’ve definitely seen him make progress from the spring to now. So, I know he’s getting better. He’s getting used to the speed of the game, and you can just tell he’s adjusting slowly, getting there. But he’s making progress and he’s definitely going to help us.”
