When meeting with the media following Clemson’s practice on Tuesday, head coach Dabo Swinney updated the health status of a second-year offensive lineman.

Swinney said redshirt freshman Ian Reed is “not where he needs to be.” The 6-foot-6, 297-pound Texas native has missed a lot of time due to an illness and played only 11 offensive snaps in one game appearance during his first year at Clemson in 2023.

“He’s not where he needs to be,” Swinney said. “I mean, he’s a kid that missed – he was in the hospital for a month last year. So, he missed basically all of last year and was very limited.”

Swinney added that Reed is healthy now, working with the twos at tackle and a “very committed kid” who has “all the tools.”

“He’s super talented… He’s big, he’s strong, he’s a good athlete. But he just hadn’t played football in a while,” Swinney said. “He’s healthy, and so he just keeps showing up every day. But he really believes in himself, and if you’ve got that and you have talent, the rest will come for you. But it’s still a little fast for him.”

One of three offensive linemen that the Tigers signed in their 2023 recruiting class, Reed enrolled at Clemson in January 2023.

The former four-star prospect from Vandegrift High in Austin, Texas, was ranked as the nation’s No. 174 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals. He earned second-team MaxPreps All-America honors as he helped Vandegrift to a 14-2 record and Texas 6A state championship berth in 2022.

“He’s a guy that we just keep bringing that water every day, just keep pouring it on him, and hopefully one of these days good stuff is gonna happen,” Swinney said.
