Swinney Updates Backup QB Battle

CLEMSON- Chris Vizzina has gotten the attention of Dabo Swinney early in fall camp.

After redshirting last season, Vizzina entered fall camp as the backup to Cade Klubnik. After Trent Pearman shined in the spring game, Vizzina needs a strong fall camp to hold off the redshirt sophomore for that spot on the depth chart behind Klubnik.

A week into camp, it sounds like Vizzina is doing what he needs to do. The big-armed quarterback made multiple throws in practice on Tuesday that caught Swinney’s eye, with the head coach noting that Vizzina is starting to stack good days on top of one another.

“It’s been good,” Swinney said after Tuesday’s practice. “He’s had a couple of really good days in a row. Made a couple of really nice throws today. A couple of very accurate deep balls. I was really pleased and like I said, he’s had two really good days. Just got to keep going.”

In fact, Swinney has been happy with what he has seen with the entire quarterback room after the first week of camp.

“All of them, I’m pleased with all those guys,” Swinney added. “They’re doing a nice job.”

Swinney even mentioned Paul Tyson, who is serving as the fourth string quarterback, with the head coach insisting that all four quarterbacks are putting in the work each and every day.

“Paul’s getting his work where he needs to get his work so we’d be ready for us as our fourth guy if needed but a ton of reps going to those first three guys. And they are all very, very functional in what we need them to do. I like their attitude, their demeanors, they are coming to work every day.”
