The Cleveland Guardians Trade For A Pitcher On Friday

The Cleveland Guardians have the best record in the American League at 54-31, which is fantastic for a team whose starting pitching has been among the worst in baseball this season.

The team ace, Shane Bieber, was lost for the season in early April with Tommy John Surgery. Triston McKenzie, who is supposed to be one of the great young pitchers on the pitching staff, has been very underwhelming this season and was just sent to the minors. Gavin Williams, once ranked as Cleveland's best pitcher in the minor league, has been injured all season and just made his first start of the year on Wednesday night.

Hence, the pitching staff needs much help, but the bullpen has been carrying the load and is the best in baseball. Still, they are going to need to add some arms that could give the team some innings in blowout games so they don't overwork guys who will be on their playoff roster if they reach the postseason, and the Guardians did make a trade on Friday that could help with that.

Cleveland traded cash to the San Francisco Giants for pitcher Spencer Howard.

The 27-year-old pitcher is in his fifth major league season and will be heading to his fourth team. He started with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020 and then went to the Texas Rangers in the middle of 2021. He then found his home with the Giants this year.

Howard appeared in seven games for the Giants this season and had a 5.63 ERA.

This move by Cleveland is to get another arm and maybe use him if they need help out of the bullpen if players start to go down.
