One thing that can be said about Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward is that he is consistent. Since entering the league, he has consistently been a top-level cornerback who can turn the football over to his offense.

Since he was taken No. 4 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, Ward has had at least two interceptions in each of the last six seasons. Ward is a three-time Pro Bowler who is well respected around the league , but that level of respect may be higher than any of the fans think.

According to ESPN, in a poll put together by coaches, executives, and scouts, Ward was named as the No. 2 cornerback in the NFL behind only Denver Broncos’ Patrick Surtain. Ward was voted as high as the No. 1 spot and made a big jump after being ranked No. 9 a year ago.

"Fast, fluid, with upper-tier coverage skills and high football IQ," an NFL personnel evaluator said. "Can create ball production in man or zone but can match up against just about any No. 1 receiver due to his size and speed. And he has the elite movement skills to cover in the slot when asked."

Injuries have been an issue with Ward but he has been able to stay clear of suffering a significant one. He misses a couple of games a year due to soft tissue injuries and has had trouble with concussions, but nothing that has made him miss a season or close to one. Ward has played in 12 games at least each season but has been unable to play in more than 15.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Ward allowed 31 receptions for 290 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions on 63 targets last season. Quarterbacks are not throwing his way a ton and when they are it has not been very successful.

Ward is a key part of the Browns’ defense and the leader of a really good cornerback room . Jim Schwartz’s defense thrives on getting pressure up front and allowing the defensive backs to make a play. That goes hand in hand with the strengths that Ward brings

In 2024, Ward is set up to have another really strong season, and perhaps his best yet if he can avoid a nagging injury that sidelines him for multiple weeks. Still, those around the NFL are extremely high on the player that he is.
