Massive Hurricane Season Ahead

Accuweather expects an “explosive” hurricane season. Given the sharp warming of the North Atlantic and the likely weather consequences, this should not be a surprise.

“A super-charged hurricane season could spawn a near-record number of storms in the Atlantic this year, and forecasters may even run out of names for storms amid a frenzy of tropical systems,” AccuWeather forecasts wrote. The Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1 and goes through the third week of November.

Decades Of Storms

It has been assumed for at least a decade that global warming would lift the number and intensity of hurricanes, and cyclones. India and northern Australia have been hammered by massive storms in the last two years. Some climate experts want a new category of hurricane–Category 6. This is because the strongest storms have outgrown the high end of the SAFFIR-SIMPSON Hurricane Scale. Category 5 hurricanes have sustained winds of over 155 miles per hour.

The economic fallout from hurricanes has increased. Not only do hurricanes often do hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Insurance companies have quit selling home and condo insurance for some parts of the coastal US, particularly Florida. Area homeowners have reached a point at which they must relatocate because they cannot afford insurance,.
