Your doughnut fix may have to wait: Structure fire closes Krispy Kreme in Clive

A structure fire Saturday night at the Krispy Kreme store in Clive caused severe smoke damage throughout the building, prompting what's expected to be an extended closure, according to a news release from the Clive Fire Department.

The Clive store provides doughnuts to the two other metro Krispy Kreme stores, in Ankeny and West Des Moines, the Register reported previously. A person who answered the phone at the West Des Moines store on Sunday said it was closed but would reopen when an alternative source is developed.

The Clive Fire Department responded at about 11:09 p.m. to the fire at 1880 N.W. 46th St. and found "heavy fire in the kitchen area," the release from Clive fire marshal Blake Boyle said. Crews from Urbandale and Windsor Heights also responded.

The main fire was quickly suppressed, but fire personnel remained at work for about two hours to ventilate the building and ensure the fire wouldn't rekindle, the release said. The worst fire damage was to the kitchen area. Its cause remains under investigation.

The Clive store, which opened in 1999, was the first Krispy Kreme in Iowa, according to Register archives. It was planned to be the first of three locations in Iowa that year, but it would take until 2018 before a second store opened in Ankeny. A third store opened in Council Bluffs in 2014, completing the trifecta, and a fourth opened in West Des Moines last year.
