    Clovis man sentenced to prison for assaulting police officer

    LUBBOCK, Texas — 40-year-old Carlos Lopez of Clovis was sentenced to eleven years in the Department of Corrections after a Curry County Jury found him guilty of Battery on a Police Officer, according to a press release from the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

    Officers were dispatched to the La Vista In on October 2, 2023. The press release said officers made contact with Lopez who became “belligerent” and positioned himself into a fighting position. Lopez appeared as if he was going to comply with officers as they aimed their taser at him, but then charged at them, advancing towards an officer’s gun. Lopez was then tased.

    When officers were detaining Lopez, he struck an officer in the jaw and another in the chest wile attempting to bite officers.

    Officers verified Lopez had an outstanding warrant for failure to comply with probation.

    Honorable Drew Tatum sentenced Lopez to eleven years in the Department of Corrections which included a 4-year habitual for each count of battery on a Police Officer.
