Iowa DNR Investigates Fish Kill in Northeast Iowa
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a northeast Iowa fish kill. On July 19th, the DNR Field Office in Manchester was notified of dead fish in Crane Creek, approximately two miles southwest of Readlyn in Bremer County. Officials believe the fish kill originated at 250th Street and Piedmont Avenue.

Council approves buying back-up generator with grant funding
The Monticello City Council held their regular meeting on July 15. The short agenda included action on the purchase of a generator for the city's west water tower. In 2023, the city was awarded a FEMA grant in the amount of $70,613, administrated by the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department (HSEMD), for a back-up generator for the west water tower. (The city submitted the grant application in 2021.) The grant covers up to 100 percent of the cost of securing and installing the generator, with federal funding covering 90 percent in an amount not to exceed $60,525, 10 percent from the state not to exceed $6,725, plus up to $3,363 in grant administration expenses.

Marion to Celebrate National Night Out on August 6
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. This year, National Night Out will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The Marion Police Department is partnering with Marion Parks and Recreation, the Marion Public Library and the Marion Fire Department to organize a community-wide event from 5-7 p.m. at Thomas Park, 343 Marion Blvd.

Construction for the City’s new public safety training facility will soon be underway. The project will include several phases, including the construction of two training structures. The Marion Fire Department and other agencies will use the facility to train on ground fire operations, elevated rescues, victim searches, fire ventilation and more. On Monday, July 29, Abode will begin extensive site grading, along with water main, storm sewer, pavement subbase and foundation work. This stage is expected to take two months, weather permitting. This project is located on City-owned property near the Public Services Maintenance Facility and construction will not impact traffic. The project is partially funded by a $900,000 bequest from Don and Ruth DeVault.
Manchester City Council Approves Livestock Requests
The Manchester City Council has given their okay for livestock to be housed at a property within the city limits. Wayne and Niki Miranda are in the process of purchasing property at 245 Park Drive, which is just over 21 acres on the edge of Manchester by the hospital. The Mirandas are requesting permission to house livestock on the site – primarily two cow/calf pairs, four ponies and a horse.
