As the Michigan Wolverines enter the 2024 college football season as the defending national champions, the program received some optimistic news regarding the possibility safety Rod Moore could play this season following an offseason ACL injury.

Moore, who enters his senior season with the Wolverines, tore his ACL during spring practice shortly after announcing his return to Michigan for the 2024 campaign. Moore has been a staple of the Wolverines' defense the past two seasons, accruing 141 tackles and six interceptions in that span — most notably the game-sealing interception against Ohio State last fall.

After being named one of four captains for the Wolverines this fall, Moore spoke to the media on Thursday with updates regarding his recovery process.

“I’m in a good place," Moore said. "Recovery is going good. We’re kinda just attacking it each and every day, physically. My leg is getting stronger. I’m walking just fine, you can see, so that’s the good thing about it.”

When asked about his role while continuing to recover, Moore mentioned that he could be a player-coach on the sidelines.

“I think it could be potentially both, player and coach Rod,” Moore said of this season. “We’ll see how it goes in the future, as far as player-wise. But for now, I’m Coach Rod, continuing to push the guys going forward."

Moore did not specify a time frame for a possible return but still has not ruled out a possible return at some point later in the season.

Even without Moore's services for most of the season, the Wolverines' defense is expected to remain one of the top units in the nation.

With defensive linemen Mason Graham, Josaiah Stewart and Kenneth Grant all returning alongside star cornerback Will Johnson, the Wolverines should still be able to consistently stifle opposing offenses.

The No. 11-ranked Wolverines open their 2024 campaign on Aug. 31, when the Fresno State Bulldogs travel to Michigan Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff. The game will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock.
