Why Sacramento State Will Win
Again, the offense has the upside to explode.
Marcus Fulcher is a strong veteran running back, Kaiden Bennett is a great all-around quarterback who knows what he’s doing, and there’s enough pop to make San Jose State have to press.
The Spartans are retooling on the offensive front, the quarterback play isn’t a sure thing, and the defense could use more of a breather than this to start the season.
Why San Jose State Will Win
The Sacramento State defense isn’t anything great.
There’s not going to be enough of a pass rush to matter, third downs will be a problem, and the Spartans have to take advantage early on by grinding away.
They have a good receiving corps, and Washington State transfer Emmett Brown shouldn’t be bad.
On the other side, the second-best defense in the Mountain West last season has just enough experience and age to be okay as the game goes on. It might have to survive an early push, but it should settle in.

New Mexico had Montana State in big trouble, and then it all fell apart. Sacramento State won’t be fazed by playing an FBS game, and the Spartans will sputter early.
It’s a long game - San Jose State will start to chip away in the second half, the defense will rise up when it has to, and Niumatalolo will get a win in his first run.
